In Italy Bruno Vespa is considered an important and accredited journalist by many. He has been editor of the TV news “TG1″ (Rai1) for three years and since 1996 he is the host of one the main Italian political talk show “Porta a Porta” (Rai1).
In 1992 when he was editor of TG1 he stated that his reference publisher was Democrazia Cristiana, the party that dominated Italian politics for over fifty years. DC collapsed in 1994 as consequence of Mani Pulite investigation that disclosed a huge corruption at every political level. After the fall of the party many members of DC joined Forza Italia (Silvio Berlusconi’s) so that FI became the party with more Christian Democrats inside.
Owing to his statement Vespa was criticized and accused to use information and journalism for the interest and advantage of political parties and political power.
This critic has been and it still is very recurring in Vespa’s professional life. He is often accused to be too obliging towards political leaders, especially Silvio Berlusconi, and political power. Comedian Beppe Grillo said about him:“Bruno Vespa is a damage for the Country, for free information and for economy”.
In May 2005 he has been wiretapped while speaking to Salvatore Sottile, present President of the Chamber of Deputies’ spokesman. In that wiretap Vespa assured Sottile that he would have done a “made to measure-installment” for Gianfranco Fini (Foreign Minister and leader of Alleanza Nazionale at that time).
During the phone call they discussed about which politician from the centre-left wing Fini would have preferred as other main guest.
Hilarious, and according to someone revealing, Berlusconi’s slip-up during a recent Porta a Porta installment. The Italian Prime Minister repeatedly called Vespa “Dottor Fede“, Mister Fede, referring to the journalist Emilio Fede.
Fede, editor and host of Tg4 (Rete4 – network Mediaset – owned by Berlusconi -), has been criticized by Agcom (Italian Institute Guarantor of Communication) several times because of his bias towards Silvio Berlusconi and his party. Actually Fede has never hidden a liking for Berlusconi as he ostentatiously showed in 1994 when the tycoon won the elections.
Honestly it results very difficult to understand how Bruno Vespa is still considered an accredited and professional journalist. Or simply a journalist.
But this is how things go in Italy.
Here is the transcription of Vespa-Sottile wiretap:
Picture by Sospensorio Sources and the wiretap transcription from Wikipedia
- Bruno Vespa: Pronto.
- Salvatore Sottile: Bruno!?! Salvatore.
- Vespa: Ehi!
- Sottile: Senti com’è strutturata la trasmissione?
- Vespa: Niente dipende da voi…
- Sottile: No, aspetta…
- Vespa: Gliela strutturiamo, gliela confezioniamo addosso…
- Sottile: Che fai, fai una ricostruzione sui documenti che ci sono?
- Vespa: No no, allora ti facciamo il Berlusconi in parlamento.
- Sottile: Berlusconi in parlamento.
- Vespa: Perfetto… E poi i due rapporti insieme.
- Sottile: I due rapporti insieme…
- Vespa: E poi un pezzo sull’inchiesta di Ionta
- Sottile: Un pezzo sull’inchiesta di Ionta…
- Vespa: Esattamente.. e basta insomma…
- Vespa: E come contraddittore?
- Sottile: Ehm.. non so tu chi c’hai Fassino?? Chi c’hai?
- Vespa: No, non lo so, uno che proponevamo noi se lui non ha niente in contrario sarebbe Rutelli… Non gli va??
- Sottile: Non lo so… non lo so… Aspetta un attimo… E di altre persone chi c’è in più?
- Vespa: Di altre persone ci sarebbero Mario Arpino…

- Vespa: Proviamo?
- Sottile: (a Gianfranco Fini) O proviamo a Fassino?

- Sottile: Sì.
- Vespa: Benissimo… Domani!
- Sottile: Domani alle 16.30.
- Vespa: Aggiudicato.
- Sottile: Vabbuò, ciao.
- Vespa: Ciao, ciao…

Fantastic article you’ve written there. Great points on the Porta a Porta host… Bruno Vespa’s body language and demeanour on Television is suspicous simply in the way he conducts his interviews but what that wire tap revealed is astonishing! Just crazy… Unbelievable he is allowed to continue working! How is that fair to the people? By the way I love the caricature you used too… look at that mean & heavy hand!

Thank you.
Yes, i know it is unbelievable he’s still working, and nobody say a word about that. I mean, journalists like Emilio Fede are like him but they work in Mediaset, it’s a private network, owned by Berlsconi….so what they do it is nauseating but hey they work there and are paid by Mr B so you can’t expect a lot from them. But Vespa works in a public network, he must be objective and a “free thinker”. But nobody care about it. I can’t understand why politicians from the opposition wing keep on going to Porta a Porta, (and keep on acting like they stand in front of a real journalist. They should stop going there, it’s like being interwieved by Fede.

Hi Z,
yes you’re right they are ruining Italy. But do you really think there will ever be someone like Obama in Italy?? And who? I don’t know where you from but if you can take a look at the italian opposition wing…. they are always the same faces, nobody new (or young).
And yes, they are ruining Italy, but who allows it? The italian citizens.
